(ぶんかさい)

The gang turned up to our first bunkasai at the Japanese cultural day at Mt Cootha in our new Gogo Japanese T-shirt!

We watched mochitsuki (hammering of fresh rice cake), calligraphy, taiko drums and tea ceremony.

Wish we could eat more mochi….  Hope we can do our own mochitsuki sometimes.

Setsubun Party

(Bean-Throwing Festival)

Date: Feb 3rd (Sat) 2018

What a night! We celebrated bean-throwing festival and made lucky direction sushi rolls. We scared them away!

Background: Setsubun is day before spring in old calendar. Japanese people celebrate Setsubun by mame-maki (throwing beans), to cast out demons and invite good luck/happiness. While throwing beans, we chant Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi! (=Out with evils and in with fortune!)

Izakaya Party

(Japanese pub food party)

Good food, good sake, and good people.

What more can we ask? Our little classroom had our first little Izakaya party to celebrate the end of our first Surviving Japan course. Aya sensei made all the Izakaya food dishes. Yum yum yum. We tried out real authentic Japanese pub food such as レバ、人参しりしり、浅漬け、なす漬け and many more. Traditional authentic Japanese pub food is so healthy with lots of veggies.
